Antiracisme

Kootenay Anti-Racism Education (KARE)

Joint Statement

West Kootenay, BC / Traditional & Ancestral Unceded Territories, June 15th 2020  — The newly forming Kootenay Anti-Racism Education (KARE) is an alliance comprised of members from local Nelson public schools including staff and students, Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice, Selkirk College’s Mir Centre for Peace, UBC Faculty of Education West Kootenay Campus, and Nelson Police Restorative Justice.

We stand together against racism in all its forms, including anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Asian racism, and anti-POC (People of Colour) racism.  We uphold the value and dignity of all members of our learning communities and express our deepest solidarity with our Black students and families at this difficult time and into the future.

We are committed to the life-long work of unlearning racism and dismantling white supremacy through concerted actions and deep listening, using an intersectional (Crenshaw, 1989) as well as a critical place-conscious lens (Greenwood, 2020). To do so, KARE members will amplify and centre diverse Black, Indigenous, and POC voices to address systemic racism in the realms of education, justice and public health.

As teachers/learners and leaders in our fields, we will reflect on how we can do better; we will hold each other accountable to continue (un)learning and carry on the essential work of anti-racism education and actions in our community.
